1 NOTE William Foulke Spencer (I), was the last child of the Foulke and
2 CONC Spencer families born in Thomas Foulke's house, on Edward and Eleanor
2 CONC Foulke's land, at Penllyn, Gwynedd, Pa. He left Pennsylvania for
2 CONC Cincinnati, Ohio, before 1860 (age 26), when he married Christiana
2 CONC Bradley of Philadelphia.

2 CONT His first two daughters (1861 & 1864) were born in Cincinnati, and the
2 CONC remainder of the children (1866 - 1873) were born in Richmond,
2 CONC Indiana.

2 CONT "He was reported to be a pacifist, as all Quakers were, and to have
2 CONC had some activity in what was called the underground in bringing the
2 CONC black slaves up into the North during the war." (Philip Boyd letter)

2 CONT After the war, he was initially an attorney: His earliest known
2 CONC business was, ca. 1865-66,  "Washburn & Spencer, Attorneys at Law". A
2 CONC business card, in the possession of William F. Spencer V (1998),
2 CONC indicates the business was at No. 298 Main Street, Richmond, Indiana,
2 CONC and that, while John M. Washburn was "Late of Wabash, Ind.", Wm. F.
2 CONC Spencer was "Late of Cincinnati, O."

2 CONT His older brother George also moved to Richmond, Ind. some time after
2 CONC he sold the Thomas Foulke house in 1854. (At least one son was born
2 CONC there, in 1866.)

2 CONT He worked for George T. Grant making furniture, later forming his own
2 CONC furniture company, Haynes, Spencer, & Co.   Haynes, Spencer took over
2 CONC manufacturing business from George Grant including the famously
2 CONC elaborate secretarial desks designed by Wooten. Purchasers included
2 CONC Jay Gould; one of the desks is in the Smithsonian Museum.  Haynes,
2 CONC Spencer, & Co. failed in 1892 due to a fire, and business conditions.

2 CONT Later that year, he founded the Richmond School Furniture Company,
2 CONC making desks, blackboards, etc. and the American Lawn Mower Company,
2 CONC sharing facilities.   Its foundry work for the metal frames needed the
2 CONC natural gas recently found further north, and he moved the company to
2 CONC Muncie, Ind. in 1902 to take advantage of its inexpensive abundance.

2 CONT "It was there [at the Muncie headquarters of the American Lawn Mower
2 CONC company) where I first remember seeing him as a tall handsome man with

2 CONC Christian, John, William, and Gottlieb, left Lautenbach on the evening
2 CONC of September 19, 1854 with the Hiebers, F. Messner, & Keil families.
2 CONC They traveled in big wagons and a train, with their numerous chests,
2 CONC trunks, & baggage, to the Port of Le Havre, France.  There they
2 CONC boarded the Westmoreland, a three-masted sailing vessel.  After a very
2 CONC hazardous and stormy 28-day trip they landed in Dunkirk, N.Y. on 4
2 CONC November 1854.  They traveled by another boat to Sandusky City, Ohio,
2 CONC and then overland to Brokensword, Crawford County, Ohio.  There they
2 CONC met other "Landsleute" from the old country and a German Methodist
2 CONC Congregation (which they joined in 1857).  The "real motive" for
2 CONC leaving the Homeland was to escape German military duty for the sons
2 CONC (J. Jacob was then 12).  Despite this relocation, J. Jacob then had to
2 CONC serve in the U.S. Civil War.

2 CONT Sometime after Christine's death (12 August 1882), Johann suffered a
2 CONC mowing machine accident, leaving his left hand crippled.  He then
2 CONC retired to Bucyrus, Ohio.

2 CONT Johann and Christine always lived frugally and simply.  They were
2 CONC devout Christians, greatly concerned with the physical and spiritual
2 CONC welfare of their families, neighbors, & friends.  Johann was a tither,
2 CONC and gave liberally to the church locally and for the extension of
2 CONC Christ's Kingdom.  He was known as a man of honesty & integrity, faith
2 CONC & prayer, a regular attendant at all church services, and versed in
2 CONC the Scriptures.

2 CONT Johann had abundant health, and was "laid aside" for only his last
2 CONC three months -- his passing on was "quiet and serene".

1 NOTE After moving to Ohio from Germany at age 12, at least in part because
2 CONC his family wanted to avoid German military service for Jacob and his
2 CONC (then four) brothers, Jacob had to serve in the U.S. Civil War.  He
2 CONC served from October 1861 to July 1865, and was a prisoner of war in
2 CONC Tyler, Texas for one day less than a year.  Though he suffered the
2 CONC usual hardships and privations common to prisoners of war, he came
2 CONC through it without any serious handicaps and lived to over 91 years
2 CONC old.

3 CONC the top of the handle.  Every hundred years the couple with the cup
3 CONC adds their initials and year.  The first engraving, then, was
